My name is Donald Monk and I've been a magical entertainer for over forty years.
I've spent a lot of my performing time on stage doing what we call in the trade 'stand up'. I also do children's shows and close-up magic too.

'How to be Magic' is full of tricks that, with a little practice, can be performed by anyone. They do not need expensive props, just everyday objects. But the effects are truly magical and will not fail to impress.
I am a semi-professional Magician, but my 'real' job is a teacher. I teach children with behavioural difficulties. I use many of the tricks featured in 'How to be Magic' to get pupils' interest.
They work a treat, time after time, particularly the Impossible Knot and the Dislocated Fingers.
The all time favourite though, is the Talking Matches. With the help of my Teaching Assistant I have been fooling pupils and staff for months! (We even did it to the Dinner Lady, using soup spoons instead of matches!).

The key to this work is that all the effects are easy to do and use everyday items such as string, matches, coins and even elastic bands.
The book itself is easy to read with large text, great illustrations, detailed diagrams and very clear instructions.
Each effect is explained from the spectators point of view and then followed up with hints and tips as to how the effect should be presented. This kind of information is what makes simple effects really entertaining.
